There are three important factors in selecting key words that will lead to success. Many web marketers miss one or two when they choose their key words and that can lead to less effectiveness. To be successful, you need to assess your strengths and weaknesses in the following key words areas.
Number Of Searches
At first glance, it appears that choosing key words with high search numbers would be a wise decision, and it may well be. However, the higher the number of searches, the stronger the competition usually. Often the money is not made using extremely highly searched and general key words but the gold is more often in smaller niche markets. When you look at a list of key words where some words have 200,000 searches per month, the less searched words seem tiny. But a good key words with 4,000 searches per month can often get you as many sales with far less cost, so pay attention to the smaller niche words when choosing.
Number Of Pages
When you key in a phrase to a search engine, the results tell you how many pages of information matched your search. Those pages are your competitors. If you want to be seen in the search engines, your page has to be near the top. If there are 3 million pages on the web, that is a tougher accomplishment than if there are 175,000. For example, today, Google returned 29 million pages about “sales training” but only 15 million for business to business sales training”. Using this modifier would eliminate half the pages you need to better to get near the top. Being even more specific and entering “business to business price negotiating” cuts the competition to a meager 8 million. As you can see, the trick is to find key words that are specific enough to return buyers who can find you but that still get a good number of searches monthly.
Competition
The final factor we will discuss in this article is the level of competition. If you search a key phrase in Google, look at the right side of the page for the ads from sponsors. Count the ads on the front page and all subsequent pages until you see an ad repeat. That is a good count of the number of sponsors competing for the phrase you entered. The higher the number, the more competition for that phrase. This will mean higher costs for pay per click traffic and more competitors to overcome for organic traffic.
